PEF to provide technical support to Sindh Education Foundation
LAHORE, November 29:
          The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) will provide necessary technical support to Sindh Education Foundation to help improve its working for promoting education in the poor communities living in far-flung and remote hinterlands.
In this regard, a joint meeting was held between Chairman Punjab Education Foundation Raja Muhammad Anwar and a three member delegation of Sindh Education Foundation comprising of SEF-Director Aziz Kabbani and Associate Directors Shikri Rehman and Muhammad Abdullah Abbasi at PEF Head Office on Tuesday. PEF-MD and DMD (Ops.) were also present on the occasion.
The meeting reviewed in detail different options for enhancing bilateral co-operation between the two foundations in the field of school education and observed that Public Private Partnership model proved very successful in giving education to the poor.
PEF Chairman Raja Anwar informed the meeting that 1.1 million students are getting free quality education in partner schools and the well-designed educational interventions have helped to transform the poor children as a social asset.
The voucher scheme launched by the Punjab Education Foundation is arguably the biggest in the world as one lakh 40 thousand deserving students will be getting free education under EVS in 36 Districts by June 2012, he maintained. The Punjab Government was striving hard to ensure 100 percent enrollment in schools under its universal primary enrollment campaign and PEF model was helping to achieve this goal, concluded Raja Anwar.
On the occasion, SEF delegation explained the scope of their working and said that working of partner schools are monitored through Geographical Positioning System.

PEF’s Pre-QAT test completed in 11 districts

LAHORE - The conduction of pre-quality assurance test for the selection of new partners under Foundation Assisted Schools Programme of Punjab Education Foundation has been completed in eleven districts.


According to PEF spokesman, more than 110,000 students have so far appeared in the districts of Okara, Pakpattan, Sahiwal, Vehari, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Lodhran, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, Layyah and Rajanpur. Central control room has been set up in PEF Academic Development Unit to monitor the pre-QAT activities in the districts. The pre-QAT will conclude on December 13. The PEF has launched pre-QAT to select partner schools in the districts where FAS expansion has been planned. PEF pays monthly fee as well as text books to partner schools for the free education of deserving students.

            Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) will arrange first aid training for its 11 lakh students to prepare them for coping with any eventuality. Institute of Learning Emergency Medicine (Ireland) will train PEF master trainers who will then educate partner school heads, teachers and students about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques.
            In this regard, a meeting was held between Chairman Punjab Education Foundation Raja Anwar and Dr. Farooq Butt Director (Administration) of I.L.E.M (Ireland) in the PEF Head Office. Besides PEF-MD, DMDs and Program Directors were also present.
            Dr. Butt briefed the meeting about importance and effect of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training and added that it will sensitize the students about dealing with contingency situations. This training will be of 2 to 5 days duration. The meeting decided to arrange CPR training for PEF staff, as well.
            PEF Chairman Raja Anwar observed that this training will sensitize the students to emerge as socially responsible citizens. It is expected that it will help to reduce morbidity and mortality, he added.

LAHORE, November 26:

As many as 35 thousand students of 372 private schools took part in the pre quality assurance test of the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) for partnership under Foundation Assisted Schools (FAS) program in Multan city on Saturday.

According to the spokesman of the Punjab Education Foundation, more schools will be partnered under FAS program in phase-7 in Punjab and pre-QAT has already been held in 10 different districts to select new schools. Pre-QAT will now be held in the districts of Layyah and Rajanpur on Monday, Nov. 28, he added.

Punjab Education Foundation has arranged free education for more than one lakh and 13 deserving students studying in 189 FAS and 21 EVS partner schools in Multan district, concluded the spokesman.

 LAHORE, Nov.25:
          The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has launched a detailed area assessment survey in 19 different districts of the province to locate and identify the poor localities and city-slums for introducing education voucher scheme for poor children living in these areas. Currently, EVS is serving in 17 districts including Lahore. This scheme will give an opportunity to the children to get enrolled in ‘school of choice’ in their areas.
          This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Anwar while briefing the delegations of students, teachers and general public who visited the PEF Information Desk set-up at Children’s Literature Festival at Children’s Library Complex on Friday.
          Briefing the visiting delegations, PEF Chairman said that PEF has already distributed 60 thousand vouchers in deserving children of 17 districts so that they could join schools near to their homes. EVS is very beneficial for girl students as they often cannot go to far-off schools due to lack of resources or family traditions, he added.
          PEF is the leading benefactor of poor children as it has ensured quality education for the hapless and deprived by introducing innovative models of education through public private partnership, he concluded.
          On the occasion, students of different schools visited the PEF Information Desk and enquired about its educational activities.

The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) was providing free educational facilities to poor and deserving students in the districts of Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Khushab, Bhakkar, Sargodha and Mianwali through a network of 210 schools partnered under Foundation Assisted Schools (FAS) program.
This was stated by Regional Coordinator of Punjab Education Foundation, Syed Naveed Abbas to two-member delegation of National Audit Office, UK namely Director of Resources Ross Campbell & Audit Manager Chris Lambert during their visit to a PEF partner school in Dhok Hassu, Rawalpindi. On the occasion, Education Advisor Javed Malik and Program Officer Ms. Nighat-ul-Nisa of DFID mission in Islamabad, besides PEF-Program Officer Zahid Mahmood, were also present.
Naveed Abbas informed the UK delegation that PEF was also giving free education to about three thousand poor students through 14 partner schools partnered under Education Voucher Scheme in Rawalpindi district, alone. Public Private Partnership model of the Punjab Education Foundation has proved very successful in arranging free educational facilities for the poor children who cannot attend any school due to poverty, concluded Naveed Abbas.
On the occasion, UK team asked many questions from school teachers and the students about the quality of education in low-cost schools and education’s socio-economic impact on poor families.

PEF pre-QAT completed in 7 districts

          The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has completed the data correction activity of partner schools in 18 different districts including Lahore. These schools are partnered under Foundation Assisted Schools program with the PEF.
          According to the spokesman of the Punjab Education Foundation, PEF-IT Department has completed the students’ data correction activity in the districts including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Sialkot, Gujrat, Chiniot, Okara, Jhang, Sargodha, Pakpattan, Attock, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali and Khushab.
          According to the spokesman, next phase of data verification activity will be held in the districts of Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Bhakkar, Multan, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, D.G. Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Lodhran, Vehari and Layyah for which schedule will be announced in December 2011.

PEF QAT to select new partners

LAHORE, November 22:
            The holding of pre-Quality Assurance Test for the selection of new partner schools under Foundation Assisted Schools (FAS) program in the districts of Okara, Vehari, Pakpattan and Sahiwal has been completed today.
            In this phase-seven, a total of three lakh students of 4400 schools in 36 districts are taking part in this test. Pre-QAT is aimed to select new partners for giving free education to the poor children who cannot afford it on their own.
            According to the spokesman of the Punjab Education Foundation, pre-QAT is a requirement for partnership with new schools that are paid monthly fee besides text books for the students. This test is being held through independent partners to ensure transparency and credibility, the spokesman maintained. Central monitoring room has also been set up to monitor the holding of this test.
            Pre-QAT will now be held in the districts of Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar today (Nov. 23).
            According to the spokesman, FAS is the flagship program of the Punjab Education Foundation to encourage and promote the poor to send their children to schools where education is totally free. PEF has demonstrated that through public private partnership, better quality education can be provided at much lesser costs as compared to the public sector to educate a child in the public schooling system.

                    Pre-Quality Assurance Test of private Schools for their partnership with the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) under Foundation Assisted Schools (FAS) programme in Phase-7 would commence from November 21 (today). In this QAT, more than three lakh students of forty four hundred schools will take part in different districts of the province. The purpose of this Pre-QAT is to select the suitable schools for partnership with the Punjab Education Foundation.
                   According to Project Officer, Academic Development Unit of the Punjab Education Foundation, Zia-ud-Din But, the holding of test has been handed over to the institutions of repute so that the transparency and impartiality could be fully ensured. The detailed schedule of the Pre-QAT test has been issued at PEF website www.pef.edu.pk for the convenience of the applicants.
                   The Punjab Education Foundation has set up central control room to monitor the holding of this test which will conclude on December 13. According to the exam schedule, in case of primary school the exam of two classes will be held, while in case of middle or secondary school exam of three classes would be taken. The schools have been directed to ensure 90% attendance on the exam day.
It is mandatory that 66.67% students should obtain 35% marks in English and 40% marks in rest of the subjects.

PEF students record’s reconciliation activity

            Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has completed the verification and reconciliation of students’ record of partner schools in 16 districts including Lahore.
            According to the spokesman of the Punjab Education Foundation, data verification activity was held in PEF head office Lahore and in regional office Rawalpindi in which partner FAS schools took part. PEF-IT Department is supervising the data verification activity.
            “The purpose of this data verification is to keep the partner schools’ data up-to-date for making it fully transparent. This data is stored in software brought out by the PEF-IT Department, called students information system (SIS) - an Innovative software system to facilitate partner schools for storing and managing their students’ data without much effort.”
            In the next phase, students’ data verification of FAS partner schools in the districts of Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Bhakkar, Multan, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, D.G Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Lodhran, Vehari and Layyah will be held in the month of December, the spokesman said.
            Students’ information system (SIS) is unique software which contains all necessary record about students, concluded the spokesman.

           Astounding and remarkable results are likely to be accrued if the international bodies like the UNESCO give-out a helping hand to Punjab in promoting the most trumpeted cause of mass literacy; since UNESCO enjoys not only the experience required for the purpose, but has always been a harbinger in bringing about a social and literacy-based change in the third world.
          These views were expressed by Provincial Secretary Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education Dr. Allah Bakhsh Malik while talking to Mr. Venkata Subbarao Illapa Vuluri, Chief of Section for Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education, UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, through tele-conferencing, at his office, today.  The Paris based UNESCO team also included Senior Program Specialist Clinton Robinson, Program Specialist Ms. Sayeeda Rahman and Ms.Yura Shin.
          While talking to the UNESCO side, Dr. Malik disclosed that a total of Rs. 2500 million will be spent on the promotion of literacy by 2014. Literacy Department is working hard to promote functional literacy in remote and far-flung areas so that people could be educated through sustained efforts. It is the need of the hour that UNESCO gives all-out help to the LFBE Department by providing necessary technical assistance.  International support will go a long way in capacity building and preparing the departmental officials for the leadership role in this crusade, he added. Punjab, being the population-wise largest province of the country, carries particular importance and any educational reform here will ultimately benefit the whole country. Giving a brief of departmental activities, he said that various Projects including Literacy Programme in 32 Districts, Campaign for Enhancement of Literacy in four Districts, Community Learning Centres in Sahiwal Division, Punjab Literacy & Livelihood Programme in Multan & D.G Khan Divisions and Brick Kilns Project in Multan & Khanewal Districts have been launched to combat the menace of illiteracy and achieve the goal of 100 percent literacy by the year 2020 leading to "Literate, Learning and Prosperous Punjab." On the occasion, UNESCO Islamabad’s representative Arshad Saeed, Chief of Education Section of Planning & Development Department Khalid Baseer Sheikh, Inayat Ullah and Col (r) Ikram Ullah also presented their proposals for the promotion of education by mobilizing non-formal sector.

With a view to expand the opportunities of higher education in the
public sector and to open the doors of quality education to the
students in colleges near to their homes, a sum of Rs. 1385 million
was being spent on the setting up of 67 new colleges in different
districts in Punjab during the current fiscal year. This will help to
facilitate the students to get college education without being
financially burdened as Punjab government is committed to provide best
education to the students.
This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Anwar
while addressing the prize distribution ceremony of a private group of
colleges at satellite town Rawalpindi on Saturday. College students,
parents and members of the faculty attended the function.
Raja Anwar maintained that college education was top priority of the
Punjab government adding that provision of missing facilities is
especially ensured in the colleges so that students could get
education-friendly environment in the colleges. Punjab government was
spending Rs. 861 million on 73 different schemes aimed at the
provision of various missing facilities. This will help to maintain
standard of education of colleges, he hoped.
Raja Anwar said that educational reforms of the Punjab government are
aimed at shaping youth for the competitive world of tomorrow so that
they could emerge as best leaders to handle tangible affairs of
governance and state affairs. Educational institutions’ environment
must also promote creativity in the students, he added. We are living
in an era of knowledge-explosion when latest trends in knowledge are
re-shaping the world affairs. He said that Pakistan is rich in natural
resources and human resource which can change the destiny of the
nation. Our main problem is mismanagement which should be dealt with
by the educated youth.

Health Education Program for PEF partner schools
LAHORE, November 04:
          Health Education Program has been launched in the partner schools of the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) to sensitize the students about the principles of general healthcare so that healthy youth could come out.
          This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Muhammad Anwar while addressing the medical aid boxes’ distribution ceremony In Burewalla on Friday. The medical aid boxes were provided by the Mukhtar Sharif Welfare Trust for the partner schools.
          Addressing the ceremony, Raja Anwar said that 460 PEF partner schools have been given the medical aid boxes in the first phase. This program will help to save the students from different diseases including the menace of Dengue, he said. He appreciated the philanthropic spirit of Mukhtar Sharif Welfare Trust for providing medical aid boxes to the PEF partner schools and said that this spirit of philanthropy is a great social asset. He appealed to the corporate sector to come forward to support the cause of education so that no one could be deprived of it. This will give them trained human resource to run the trade and industrial sector, he maintained.
          While discussing the issue of computerized paper marking system in the Boards of Intermediate & Secondary Education in Punjab, he maintained that this computerized system is being improved to serve the purpose efficiently in future, adding that the whole world is turning to IT for improving governance structure by introducing holistic reforms in every sphere. Giving a detail of the introduction of IT in Boards’ examination system, he said that this has helped in reducing the total number of examination centers in the province. As a result of IT Technology, a total of 200 centers in Lahore, 150 in Faisalabad and 100 in Rawalpindi Boards were reduced besides helping the students to appear in centers near to their homes. Punjab Education Foundation has successfully used computerized OMR Technology for the conduction of biannual held Quality Assurance Test, he maintained. The function was also addressed by the Chairman Mukhtar Sharif Welfare Trust, Riasat Ali Bhatti and others.
          Earlier, PEF Chairman, Raja Anwar visited various PEF partner schools in Burewalla and enquired about the quality of education from the students and the teachers. He asked the school Principals to benefit from the soft loans scheme introduced by the Punjab Education Foundation for setting up science labs & the introduction of computer education and improve the standard of education according to the requirements of the job market.

       Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) is going to launch its educational
program of free education in seven more districts so that maximum
number of students could be accommodated.
       Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Muhammad Anwar said this
while addressing the ceremony held in connection with Pakistan Day at
a partner school in Daroghawalla on Sunday.
       Raja Anwar said that PEF is all set to launch its educational
programs in new districts. This will help to accommodate more
deserving students, he said. PEF has emerged as an efficient
organization to give quality education to the poor students and its
performance has also been recognized by the donor agencies.
       While stressing upon the importance of education, he said that no
civilized society could be formed sans education and added that Punjab
Government was committed to promote literacy at the grassroots.
Various useful interventions of PEF have helped to open the doors of
education to the poor, he said. It’s the basic right of the poor that
their children could enjoy best educational facilities without any
financial burden and PEF has enabled the poor communities to send
their children to schools where they are getting quality education
free of cost, he concluded.

Rs. 3 billion for missing facilities’ provision—Raja Anwar
LAHORE, August 19:
Punjab Government will spend an amount of Rs. 3 billion for providing
various missing facilities in primary and middle schools, during the
current fiscal year, to improve the academic standards of public
sector schools.
This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Muhammad
Anwar while meeting with a 10-member delegation of PEF partner school
teachers who called on him at his office on Friday.
While talking to the delegation, Raja Anwar said that education is the
basic right of all the children. He told that different interventions
like capacity building of teachers as well as education managers;
continued assessment of learning achievements through examination;
provision of free-text books; I.T and Science Labs have already been
introduced. Moreover, he added that up-gradation of schools from
Primary to Elementary level & from Elementary to High level and
provision of various missing facilities including drinking water,

order to improve existing Science Labs in Secondary Schools and to
strengthen Science Practical education, a development scheme has been
proposed and in the first phase, one thousand high / Higher Secondary
Schools, having highest enrolment, will be provided quality science
equipment and standardized practical books will also be developed
under this scheme, he added.

leadership traits in them so that the students could emerge as best

Punjab Govt. to set up Knowledge City in Lahore- Raja Anwar
LAHORE, September 10:
The Punjab Government has planned to set-up ‘Knowledge City’ in Lahore to further augment the educational activities. A suitable piece of land near Dera Chahal has been identified for this purpose by the Government.  
This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), Raja Anwar while addressing the students’ declamation contest at PEF head office on Saturday. On the occasion, students presented their point of view about achievements and failures of Pakistani nation during the last 63 years.
Giving a detail of Punjab Government’s educational endeavors, Raja Anwar told that educational expenses of 25 thousand deserving students will be borne out through endowment fund during the current fiscal year. Endowment fund was greatly helping the poor students to complete their education without being burdened, he maintained. Similarly, he added that a sum of Rs. One billion has been exclusively earmarked for giving stipends to school girls of remote hinterlands.
Punjab Government is committed to promote education in less-developed and remote areas as it’s a tool of self-enlightening. Globalization has transformed the whole world into one big village, he said. The thread of the growth of society depends upon the quality of education that is being imparted.
In order to better equip the students with Information & Communication Technology, one thousand IT labs will be established in elementary schools.
Government of the Punjab is aimed at raising literacy level through establishing quality educational institutions all over Punjab, especially in far flung and less-developed areas, he added.

PEF TO SPONSOR SCIENCE LAB IN PARTNER SCHOOLS.
TEXT BOOKS WORTH RS. 650 MILLION DISTRIBUTED IN PARTNER SCHOOLS : RAJA ANWAR
LAHORE, September 15:                               
           Punjab Education Foundation has planned to provide financial assistance for the setting up of science lab in its partner schools.  For this purpose, a sum of Rs. One Lakh per school will be provided as financial aid to the deserving partner schools.
          This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation Raja Muhammad Anwar while addressing the District Coordination meeting of partner schools of Multan and Muzaffargarh at Multan Arts Council, Multan on Thursday. The DCM was largely attended by partner schools’ principals and teaching staff who exchanged ideas about further improving the PEF model of public private partnership in education.
          Raja Anwar told the meeting that the Punjab Education Foundation has increased the financial assistance of students in the elementary level to Rs. 400/- student. Previously, it was Rs. 350/- student, he added. He also disclosed that PEF is going to provide library books to be arranged through GTZ, for partner primary schools. He said that PEF is committed to improve and strengthen the partner schools so that they could better serve the students. For this purpose, a plan was also launched in collaboration with Punjab Bank to restore flood affected partner schools in the Southern Punjab. He added that partner schools will also be given financial aid to buy computers so that the students could learn IT.
          Raja Anwar disclosed that text books worth Rs. 650 million have been provided free of cost to the partner schools for distribution among the students. He announced that position holder students of Punjab Examination Commission will be given honorarium in the month of October to encourage them. PEF has introduced electronic marking of quality assurance test which will further improve the examination system, he maintained. PEF has launched the biggest ever educational programme in the southern districts of Punjab which will help to promote education in the poor, he concluded.
          On the occasion, partner schools principals also spoke on the occasion and presented their proposals for the promotion of education.

              Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has evolved a comprehensive policy to ensure safety of life of partner school students during study tours.
              This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Muhammad Anwar while presiding over a condolence reference to condole the death of students in Kalarkahar bus accident at his office. Various PEF officers and subject specialists also attended the meeting. The meeting offered Fateha for the departed souls and prayed to Allah Almighty to grant courage and solace to the bereaved
families.
              While addressing the meeting, Raja Anwar told that in line with the policy of the Punjab government, the security of life of the partner school students during study tours would be ensured fully. In this regard, it would be fully ensured that the transport hired for the study tours would be in good condition and all the documents would also be up to date.  Security guard would be arranged, he added.  The purpose of this step is to fully protect the students.

An honor for Pakistan-China confers Award upon Secretary Literacy

LAHORE, Oct. 2:
      Consequent upon the conferment of Confucius Award, 2011 upon
provincial Secretary Literacy, Dr. Allah Bakhsh Malik by the UNESCO,
the government of People’s Republic of China has also awarded him with
its Confucius Award on the eve of 2562nd birthday of great Chinese
thinker and philosopher Confucius at a ceremony held in Qufu city of
Shandong province in China.
       Besides others, provincial Governors of all the Chinese
provinces also attended this grand ceremony which was largely attended
by intellectuals, thinkers and academicians to pay tribute to great
Chinese social philosopher.
Dr. Malik was also invited as a guest of honour to visit the Temple of
Confucius in Qufu. This Temple is the original, largest and most
famous of the Temples of Confucius in China and East Asia.

                   Engro Corporation will give six branded laptops to girl students of Punjab Education Foundation who secured more than 90 percent marks in the Matric 2011 examination.
                   According to PEF spokesman, Mehwish Khalid (Chakwal), Najma D/o Abdul Jabbar (Bhakkar), Tahira Farzand (Sargodha), Samina Aman (Mianwali), Aamina Asif and Laraib Arshad (Khushab) will be given free laptops in recognition of their meritorious performance in the secondary school examination 2011.
                   These girls were enrolled in schools partnered under foundation assisted schools programme with the Punjab Education Foundation. The function will be held on October 21 in PEF Regional Office, Rawalpindi at 11-00AM. High officials of Engro Corporation, Punjab Education Foundation, besides partner schools’ management and families of winning students will also attend the ceremony.

          Punjab Government has given top priority to the promotion of quality education in the public sector institutions. Different holistic reforms have been introduced so that the poor and deserving strata could easily access the educational opportunities. During the current fiscal year, a total sum of Rs, 800 million has been provided to promote functional-literacy in the marginalized segments of the society.
          This was stated by Chairman Punjab Education Foundation, Raja Muhammad Anwar while presiding over a meeting of parents and partner school teachers during his visit of partner schools in Baghban Pura.
During the meeting, Raja Anwar maintained that education is the most important fundamental right of every child and therefore, meaningful reforms have been taken during the last three years in Punjab so that all the children could get free education. Market-oriented education and the technological resources help the nations to excel and Pakistan is required to pay special attention to the acquirement of science and technology so that it could become self-reliant in the real sense.
          Raja Anwar further said that the education of special children has been given equal importance so that special children could have necessary educational facilities for learning. During the current fiscal year, Rs. 500 million have been earmarked for the education of special children. He asked the parents to send their children to schools so that they could get rid of the vicious circle of poverty. Co-curricular activities help to develop balanced personality in the students; therefore, students should be encouraged to take part in sports and co-curricular activities in the schools, he concluded.
